Former Greenpeace activist turned would-be politician Grace O’Sullivan has admitted she was reluctant to join the electoral fray when asked to run for the Green Party but now believes she has a realistic chance of entering the European Parliament following this month’s elections. A 6 per cent level of support in a recent opinion poll has put her in the frame for the fourth seat in the South constituency, says the Tramore-based candidate who finds herself running for election at the same time as her sister, Lola O’Sullivan, albeit in a different contest and for a different party. Grace O’Sullivan is on the European Parliament trail for the Greens, while her sister aims to hold on to her position as a Fine Gael member of Waterford County Council.

Gary ‘Spike’ O’Sullivan make his return to the ring tonight in the US, still confident he can win a world title. O’Sullivan faces Mexican Jose Medina in a middleweight bout at Boston’s House of Blues. It’s the Cork boxer’s first fight since losing to Billy Joe Saunders at Wembley Arena 11 months ago, the first defeat of his 17-fight professional career. With the event being televised by Fox in the US, it’s a huge opportunity for O’Sullivan, who recently saw his contract with promoter Frank Warren expire and opting not to renew.

Captain Robert Oliver Daniel (ROD) Sullivan, Some rights reserved by public.resource.org
Robert Oliver Daniel (ROD) Sullivan. Captain Sullivan was born in Hannibal, MO, ca. 1893. He had one child, ROD Sullivan, Jr., b. ca. 1928. He joined the US Navy, where he learned to fly. (I believe his flight training took place in CA.) Following discharge from the US Navy, Sullivan joined Pan-American Airways in FL.
About 1932 ROD Sullivan made his first purchase of property in Lee County, North Carolina. This property was located by the Seaboard Air Line Railroad, about 10 miles north of Sanford, in the community known as Olives Siding. Over the years he continued to purchase property, acquiring approximately 800 acres. This property was referred to as Sullivan's Ranch. There was neither electricity, telephone, nor paved roads in this area until the early 1940's. Sullivan had a 'Windcharger' electrical power system for his home. After proving the feasibility of commercial aviation, and becoming Pan-Am's senior Trans-Atlantic pilot, Sullivan commuted by train from NY, his home port, to his ranch in NC, for rest and relaxation.
ROD Sullivan was First Officer on the China Clipper that first transported US airmail to Manila, departing Alemeda, CA, November 22, 1935. ROD Sullivan was active in civic affairs in his adopted county of Lee. He was a Republican. Although not one who sought publicity, he was sought by the local paper (The Sanford Herald) for interviews and by civic clubs for speaking engagements.
His career as a commercial pilot ended with the crash of Pan-Am's Yankee Clipper (Boeing B-314, Registry: NC18603) in Lisbon Portugal, February 22, 1943. Although he suffered only minor injuries, there were 24 fatalities among the 39 persons aboard. Jane Froman, noted vocalist, although with critical injuries, was one of the survivors. She was enroute to entertain US troops in Europe. Pan-Am noted that Sullivan's accident was the first in Pan-Am's Transatlantic service. Sullivan had made approximately 150 Atlantic crossings and 55 Transpacific crossings, having logged more than 15,000 hours flying time.
Sullivan was a Lieutenant Commander in the Naval Reserve and former chief aviation pilot for the Navy. Sullivan then returned to his home in NC and, following WWII, established ROD Sullivan, Inc., a multi-location electrical parts supplier. ROD Sullivan died July, 1955 in the office of his Wilmington, NC business. As of 1999, ROD Sullivan Inc., continues in business, and is operated by descendants of those he chose as his partners.
There are numerous books which mention ROD Sullivan. One subject under which he is listed is "Flying Boats." My book favorite is "An American Saga: Juan Trippe and His Pan Am Empire." by Robert Daley. Published by Random House, this book is well indexed and noted.

Joseph Sullivan was knighted by France
PETERBOROUGH -- Most people have a lot of respect for Joseph Sullivan.
Respect for the 94-year-old man's service during the Second World War.
Respect for landing on the beach in Normandy on D Day.
And respect for fighting back German troops to help liberate France.
And now the respect he is due has come from the country he fought to free.
Last month, Mr. Sullivan received a letter from the President of France saying he has been given the rank of Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour.

The fellow on the far left is clan member Dan Sullivan's GG Uncle, Major Dan Sullivan. Major Dan was the Superintendent of Police for Washington DC 1916-1926. Major Dan was from Glengarriff (Reenmeen) and came to the US in 1881. He entered the Marine Corps, became a citizen and then a policeman in the District. He worked his way up through the ranks to Superintendent of Police. Oh, yes, the fellow in the middle is Calvin Coolidge. The photo is undated so Mr. Coolidge was either Vice President or President at the time the photo was taken. I've always been proud of Major Dan Sullivan!

"Mad Dog" Sullivan was the only prisoner ever to successfully escape from Attica prison.
Joseph J. “Mad Dog’’ Sullivan, a Mafia contract hit man, made it out of the walls of Attica on April 7, 1971.
A special state police task force captured Sullivan several months later in his native New York City.
In the 2006 book ‘‘Tiers and Fears,’’ written by Sullivan’s wife, Gail, she described the escape. She wrote that he used a crude grappling hook attached to a rope and a ladder made from metal pipes to scale Attica’s wall.
